The 1983 Session of the Nebraska Legislature passed L.B. 234, establishing a vehicle identification number or VIN inspection prior to titling an out-of-state vehicle in Nebraska. The statute empowered the sheriff of each county to conduct vehicle title inspections in the county in which the vehicle resides.

The inspection shall consist of inspection of the VIN plate, manufacturer's federal sticker, odometer reading and other pertinent documentation. If the title is being held by a lien holder or leasing company, you will need to contact the designated County official in your county of residence so that they can request the title from the lien holder or leasing company. Please click on the following link (www.dmv.nebraska.gov/dvr/mvtitles/inspect.html) for additional information regarding inspections. All inspections for the public will be conducted at the Title Inspection Facility.

The fee for the inspection is $10.00.

Credit/Debit cards are now being accepted for over the counter transactions. We accept the following cards: Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. See “Fee Schedule” for costs associated with using a credit/debit card.

None of the credit/debit card fee goes to the Sheriff’s Office or Douglas County.

Impound: If your vehicle has been impounded in Douglas County, you will need to bring the title, keys and the location of where the vehicle was impounded to the Title Inspection Facility. There will also be a $16.00 Non-refundable cash fee that will be collected prior to the inspection process.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office performs inspections at the Title Inspection Facility which has drive thru garage and lane specifically designed for large vehicles and trailers. This facility is conveniently located at 8338 Chicago Street and is attached to a branch office of the Douglas County Treasurer's Office.

The Title Inspection Division is open Monday through Friday and inspections are done from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Title Inspection Division is closed on all National Holidays. There is no appointment necessary.

Customers who plan to proceed next door to the Douglas County Treasurer’s Office for vehicle licensing after completing their title inspection process should be aware that the Treasurer’s Office also closes at 4:00 p.m.  Therefore, those customers needing to visit the Treasurer’s Office after their title inspection should arrive at our office no later than 3:30 p.m. in order to complete the process.  In most cases this will leave enough time to make it to the Treasurer’s Office prior to their 4:00 p.m. closing time.

Offsite inspections are available for dealers by appointment. There will be a $2.00 surcharge per vehicle in addition to the inspection fee. Dealers must have a minimum of 5 vehicle, but no more than 20 needing inspection. These appointments may be arranged by calling our main phone number 402-444-7532 or 402-444-7536.
