The 1983 Session of the Nebraska Legislature passed L.B. 234,establishing a vehicle identification number or VIN inspection prior to titling an out-of-state vehicle in Nebraska. The statute empowered the sheriff of each county to conduct vehicle title inspections in the county in which the vehicle resides.
The inspection shall consist of inspection of the VIN plate, manufacturer's federal sticker, odometer reading and other pertinent documentation. The fee for the inspection is $10.00.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office performs inspections at the Title Inspection Facility which has drive thru garage and lane specifically designed for large vehicles. This facility is conveniently located at 8338 Chicago Street and is attached to a branch office of the Douglas County Treasurer's Office.
The Title Inspection Division is open Monday through Friday and inspections are done from 8am to 4pm. The Title Inspection Division is closed on all federal holidays. Offsite inspections are available by appointment for a small fee for dealers with a minimum of 5 vehicles needing inspection. These appointments may be arranged by calling 402-444-7532.
