Public Information Session – Public Notice
The Douglas County Sheriffs Office has sought to attain national accreditation as part of its ongoing commitment to excellence. In order for the department to attain national accreditation, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), must review the department’s policies and practices every three years. There are four basic areas the Commission will examine: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
The Douglas County Sheriffs Office is scheduled for an on-site assessment December 10 - 14, 2005. Three assessors have been selected by CALEA to perform this assessment. They are Team Leader Alfred Miller, Communications Director - Prince William, Virginia Police Department, CALEA Assessor Randy Cripe, Elkhart, Indiana Police Department, and CALEA Assessor Sergeant Scott Heimos, Grayslake, Illinois Police Department.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session, Monday, December 12, 2005 at 7:00 pm. The public hearing will be conducted in the Douglas County Law Enforcement Center (LEC) located at 3601 North 156 Street, Omaha, Nebraska.
Agency employees and the public are also invited to offer comments by calling (402) 444-6609 on Sunday, December 10, 2005 between the hours of 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The CALEA Assessment Team will take these comments.
Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to five (5) minutes and must address the police department's ability to comply with CALEA's standards. A copy of the standards is available in the lobby of the Douglas County Sheriffs Office. The local contact is Captain Tom Wheeler at (402) 444-6632 for questions about the accreditation process.
For those individuals wishing to offer written comments about the Douglas County Sheriffs Office ability to meet the standards for accreditation, please send them to:
