RELEASE DATE: May 9th 2007
This press conference details an investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office into a series of sexual assaults in the area of Canyon Road in northeast Douglas County that date back to April of 2006.
In the early morning hours of April 2006 a female victim reported that she had accepted a ride from a stranger in downtown Omaha and was taken to Canyon Road where she was sexually assaulted. She reported that the suspect drove a Mini-Van and threatened to mutilate her breasts. She was able to flee his van before she was injured.
The second sexual assault occurred in the early morning hours of November of 2006. In this case the victim also accepted a ride from a stranger in the downtown area and again was taken to Canyon Road and assaulted. The suspect was driving a mini-van, had a mole on his right cheek and possibly had a lazy eye. The victim was also threatened with mutilation to her breasts and also was able to escape before being further injured.
The third sexual assault occurred in the early morning hours of April 2007 on Canyon Road. Again the victim had accepted a ride from a stranger in the downtown area. The suspect was described as driving a mini-van, having a lazy eye, a mole on his right cheek, missing some teeth and possibly an abdominal scar. The suspect threatened to mutilate the victim with a pair of pliers and also showed a knife.
The victim was able to flee before further injury.
The fourth sexual assault also occurred in the early morning hours of April 2007 on Canyon Road. The scenario was the same and the information again was that the suspect was driving a mini-van, had a lazy eye, mole on right cheek, threatened victim with mutilation and had a shiny object possibly a knife.
Douglas County Sheriff Investigators began surveillances on Canyon Road and the downtown area approximately 8 days ago. At 2:15 AM this morning, Investigators observed a Black Kia mini-van on Canyon Road with license plate # NE OYR239 an investigator conducting surveillance in downtown Omaha recognized that the same vehicle was in the downtown area at 1:50 AM.
Canyon Road Surveillance Team had the mini-van stopped by a marked cruiser at 72nd & Military Road. The vehicle was driven by Henry Kamphaus, age 35, who was accompanied by a female passenger. When interviewed the female passenger said she was very frightened when the suspect drove on to Canyon Road as it was very secluded, dimly lit and not a frequently traveled location. Evidence from this traffic stop matched information from previous sexual assault victims and as a result of the stop an arrest was made.
Kamphaus has a dark colored mole on his right cheek, an abdominal hairline that could have resembled a surgical scar, missing front teeth, a lazy eye, and was in possession of pliers. Henry F. Kamphaus of 7205 S. 145th #18, dob 1/6/72 was booked this morning for 2 counts of sexual assault first degree and driving under suspension. A search warrant is also being served at Kamphaus’s residence in an attempt to recover evidence from these crimes and others as yet to be identified.
We know that there are other victims, yet we do not know their identities. We would ask that if there are other victims wishing to come forward that they call the Douglas County Sheriff Tip Line 444-6000.
